What is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Total joint replacement, or orthroplasty, is the process of surgically removing a damaged or arthritic joint and replacing it with an artificial joint. The artificial joint is called prosthesis. Joint replacement surgery is a procedure used when a patient suffers from severe joint pain, stiffness, or immobility because the cartilage of the affected joint is so damaged. Joint replacement surgery is also an option for patients who have sustained an injury from a traumatic incident such as some of the fractures.

Hip and knee replacements are the most common type of joint replacement procedures, though replacement surgery can be performed on other joints including the shoulder, ankle, elbow, wrist, and even fingers. The materials used in current joint replacements are carefully designed to enable the artificial joint to function similar to a normal joint.

Is Joint Replacement Right For You?

  • Are you in pain every day?
  • Is your joint mobility limited?
  • Have you exhausted non-surgical treatment options?

Unfortunately, some arthritis is so severe that non-surgical treatment is not effective. When this is the case, joint replacement can be an excellent option to eliminate pain and restore function.

Common Indications for Joint Replacement Surgery

  • Severe Joint Arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post traumatic, etc.)
  • Joint fractures
  • Joint deformities
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Painful prosthesis
  • Failure of previous joint surgery
  • Simple and complex revision of total joint replacement
